What changed
Net metering is now the law
Under the Energy (Net-Metering) Regulations, 2024 (Legal Notice 104, gazetted 26 July 2024), any home or business whose solar can feed power into the Kenya Power grid needs an approved net-metering agreement and a bi-directional meter.
Exporting without approval is treated as unauthorised injection and can be charged at the applicable base tariff, or lead to disconnection.
Systems over 10 kW need an engineer's feasibility study. Agreements run for five years and are renewable; unused credits lapse at the end of KPLC's financial year. Questions
Net metering, answered
Will my existing panels and batteries still work?
Yes. In most cases your panels, batteries and inverter stay in place. We add the metering, isolation switch and protection around them and update the inverter settings to KPLC limits.
Will I be without power on installation day?
Only your solar is isolated, for about 2–4 hours at a home. We keep grid power on wherever possible. Commercial sites take 2–3 days, scheduled around your operations, including evenings and weekends.
Does KPLC pay me for the power I export?
No cash is paid. Once approved, each kWh you export earns a bill credit worth 50% of the kWh exported, offsetting the power you import. Unused credits lapse at the end of KPLC's financial year.
What happens before KPLC approves my system?
We set your inverter to zero-export, so nothing reaches the grid without approval and you face no charges for unauthorised injection.
How long does it take?
About 1–2 weeks from booking to a tested, compliant system. The whole journey to your first net-metered bill is typically 10–16 weeks, depending on KPLC's approval and meter installation, and can be longer outside major towns.
